So I also handle many of the Avenger’s books in the Bullpen and was asked to design logos for Avengers World, Mighty Avengers, and Avengers Undercover.
When approaching the Avengers World logo, I was asked to create something that would best represent the Avengers tackling global issues. So I created a—you guessed it, globe! I was picturing the graphic elements they use on cable network news, so I wanted this logo to have some curve to it. Give it that 3-D look. Since the globe was pretty detailed already, I wanted the rest to balance out, be clear, legible, and simplistic. I remember struggling with the perfect type for WORLD, it was a bit of a challenge but we were able to settle on what you see above.
Mighty Avengers was another great one. Jonathan Hickman had already established the main Avengers and New Avengers logos. They were more like symbols rather than the traditional comic logos so I wanted to continue that line. My first move was I placed the A into a hexagon shape, I thought it would contrast well from the other Avengers/New Avengers logos. Next step was to figure out how to place MIGHTY in the hexagon without covering up too much of the A. I thought a spray painted stencil would be a nice touch since these aren’t the average Avengers. These guys fight tough and take it to the streets. Do what they have to do even if that means tagging another teams logo ;)
Finally Avengers Undercover. This was a logo that had to be gritty, leaving the reader questioning whether this team is made up of good guys or villains. It also follows Avengers Arena so I brought in the A from that logo to tie the series together.
So there you have it, another inside scoop in Behind the Design.
